A primeira paragem que fiz na California foi em San Diego e foi lá que conheci a Brynne e o trabalho fantástico que ela faz. Cada vez mais gosto de letterpress... gosto das máquinas, do papel, da tinta, da textura. Tudo é perfeito. A Harken Press nasceu em 2012, foi a paixão pela impressão que fez a Brynne sair de uma agência de publicidade e seguir com o que realmente gosta. A maioria do trabalho são convites de casamento, cartões e postais e tudo o que a sua letterpress consiga fazer.
E nada melhor que ver San Diego pelos olhos de quem lá vive. Na verdade fiquei a uns 30km de San Diego numa zona à beira-mar chamada Carlsbad. A Brynne deu-me algumas sugestões de sítios a visitar e por onde andar, mas confesso que me perdi na primeira Forever 21 que vi à entrada da cidade :)

How was born the Harken Press?
I've always loved print design. I started working as a designer at a magazine and then a design & advertising firm. I left my design agency job to take my passion for fine stationery full time and started Harken Press in 2012. The majority of my work is wedding invitations, but I also letterpress greeting cards and branding services.

My favorite things in San Diego… 
• Balboa Park - Beautiful architecture, museums, performing arts, the zoo, parks, gardens, and trails in the center of the city.
• Downtown San Diego - Lots of restaurants and bars in the Gaslamp district. Some of my favorites are Searsucker, Vin De Syrah, and Analog. There's also a really cute gift shop with lots of cards and books in the Public Library that just opened, called The Library Shop.
• Torrey Pines - A state park with hiking trails. Beautiful views of the ocean and mountains.

One normal day in Brynee's life
On an average day, I start by working on my computer in my home office. I respond to emails and paperwork, like wedding contracts, etc. Then I move onto design projects like custom invitation orders or logo projects. Depending on what's on my production schedule, in the afternoons I go out to my studio in our garage and work on letterpress printing. I offer letterpress and digital (flat) printing for bridal stationery.

A new friend and a gigantic letterpress

Todos os dias passo pelo Instagram, sou meio que viciada em ver fotografias de tanta gente, que mesmo a muitos kms [far away] partilham o seu dia, o tempo, a comida, as pessoas, tudo numa fotografia. E foi no instagram que conheci o trabalho da Rachel. E já que ía a Londres porque não conhecer mais sobre a Prickle Press. Foi o melhor que fiz.
Embarquei numa viagem rumo a Brixton numa tarde de sol em Londres. Brixton que é simplesmente um local sossegado e delicioso com casinhas todas iguais mesmo ao estilo britânico onde eu me imaginava a morar certamente. Não escondo que até estava meio eufórica, como se fosse o primeiro dia de escola, ao ir bater à porta da Rachel. Depois de tantos emails e muita conversa poder finalmente conhecer uma pessoa em pessoa é quase que uma euforia louca. E foi. Quando a porta nº 7 se abriu a mais simpática habitante de Brixton disse um "big hello". É difícil descrever o quanto fui tão bem recebida naquela casa que toda ela estava tão quentinha que já não apetecia sair de lá. Um chá com leite, umas bolachas de chocolate, muito conversa e eis que subindo ao primeiro andar entramos no estúdio onde a Prickle Press acontece. Nunca vi tal coisa, uma letterpress gigante, antiga, e de 1 tonelada, onde a Rachel faz os seus trabalhos.
Uma coisa que adoro nos britânicos é o consumo de postais e de continuarem a escrever entre eles. Quem não gosta de receber correio? A oferta é grande e os postais da Rachel são todos tão magníficos que difícil foi escolher. Numa era em que tudo é digital, poder ver uma letterpress antiga que trabalha a pedal a fazer um trabalho tão bom, é realmente algo indiscritível.
À Rachel só tenho mesmo de agradecer do fundo do coração o tempo, a disponibilidade e a simpatia com que me recebeu.

Every day I step in Instagram, I'm kinda addicted to see photographs of so many people, even those far away that share their day, the weather, the food, the people, everything in a single image. And it was in Instagram I've met Rachel's work. And since I was going to London why not learn more about her brand – Prickle Press. It was the best I've done!
I headed on a journey to Brixton in a sunny afternoon in London. Brixton which is an simply, quiet and delightful place, with houses all alike British style, where I imagined myself surely living. I do not hide that I was a little euphoric, like it was the first day of school, to going to knock at Rachel's door. After many emails and a lot of talk to finally meet someone in person, it is almost a crazy exhilaration. And it was! When the door with number 7 has opened, the nicest resident of Brixton neighborhood said a big HELLO.
It's hard to describe how much I was so well received in that house. A tea with milk, some chocolate cookies, lots of conversation and behold, ascending to the first floor we entered at the studio where the "Prickle Press" happens. I had never seen such a thing, a giant 1 ton old printer, where Rachel does its works.
One thing I love in the British is their postal consumption, and the continuity of writing postcards to each other. Who doesn't like to receive mail? The offer is extensive and the Rachel’s postcards are all so magnificent that is was hard to choose. In an era where everything is digital, seeing a pedal operated old letterpress doing a pristine job it’s something indescribable.
To Rachel I just have to thank her from the bottom of my heart the time, availability and sympathy with which she received me.

A melhor feira do mundo e arredores

Quando andava a planear a minha visita a Londres e a combinar "tea meetings" com vários designers londrinos, dei de caras só com a melhor feira do mundo. Sim, a melhor feira do mundo que ia acontecer precisamente quando eu estaria em Londres. Foi como voltar à escola, um entusiasmo que só visto. E o melhor de tudo foi ver os preparativos antes e estar com as pessoas que iam estar nesta feira. Mas calma, que feira é esta? Pois bem é a Renegade Craft Fair.
Um mundo fantástico de designers, ilustradores e arts & crafts. E tudo ali concentrado num dos sítios que nunca dispenso ir [brick lane] e com entrada gratuita. Dois dias só disto. Há melhor? Acho que cheguei mesmo a dar pulos de alegria a falar com as pessoas e com as mãos cheias de cartões, postais e uma data de coisas lindas que não resisti em trazer.
